(G) Comprehensive Development Area (CDA) Plan

The redevelopment of Pollokshaws was to lead to an increase in the housing yield.  The following photographs cover Pollokshaws as a whole and are from a publicity board from 1960.

Unfortunately a direct comparison cannot be made with the current statistics for Pollokshaws ward, as this ward also includes Shawlands as well as part of Strathbungo. The population for the ward as a whole is currently 7,615 (Glasgow City Council Estimates 2004) (Development and Regeneration Services 2005).

The 1957 survey report states that St Conval’s Primary School, Sir John Maxwell Junior Secondary, Sir John Maxwell Primary and annexe are in Pollokshaws and not two schools as noted on the 1960 board.  In 2008 there are two schools, St Conval’s Primary and Sir John Maxwell (due for closure).

The 1957 report also states that there were 120 shops as well as 10 public houses.  In 2008 there are now 20 shops, including Lidl and Morrisons.  There are 2 public houses serving Pollokshaws.

Housing

Architects JL Gleave designed the four blocks  at Shawhill.  [The Partnership went onto design the Boyd Orr building at Glasgow University.]  (Doak/Young, 1983)
These blocks were constructed in heights varying between 18 and 22 storeys and contain six flats per floor.  These consist of five 3-apartment and one 2-apartment.  Pre-cast concrete construction.
Appendix two contains models which were used to illustrate the new development in the area.

The flats were decorated in the foyer area by murals designed by sculptor Charles Anderson.  These are dated 1967.  Photographs of these murals are in Appendix One.   Charles Anderson also created murals for The Savoy Centre, Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow; Bellahouston Sports Centre, Glasgow (now gone after the refurbishment of the centre) as well as decoration at the wall opposite the entrance at Charing Cross Railway Station, Glasgow.
